Matteo Moschetti had narrowly edged compatriot Matteo Malucelli in a photo finish finale on stage 2 of the 2025 Vuelta a Burgos, in a thrilling sprint finale.

Four riders got themselves into the breakaway, and it was an entirely Spanish quartet too with Euskaltel – Euskadi duo Iker Mintegi and Txomin Juaristi joined by Ander Okamika (Burgos Burpellet BH) and Pau Llaneras (Illes Balears Arabay). Heading into the final 50km of the day, the break’s advantage over the peloton was still more than two minutes.

Once the peloton started to ramp up the pace, the gap to the breakaway steadily started to come down. By 30km to go, it was already under a minute and a half, with UAE and Q36.5 sharing the duties at the front of the bunch. By 20km to go, that gap was closer to 30 seconds and the writing looked on the wall for the break. With just over 8km to go, all the attackers had been caught.

From there, all the attention of the race turned towards an almost inevitable bunch sprint finale. In that fight for the line, it came down to a photo finish between Matteo Malucelli and Matteo Moschetti ahead of Juan Sebastian Molano. After a review, the victory was awarded to Moschetti.
