Creative Australia has announced Wenona Byrne as the director of Writing Australia.
Byrne was appointed acting director of Writing Australia on 1 July 2025 and was previously the head of literature at Creative Australia. Previously Byrne worked within a Sydney literary agency and a rights manager at Allen & Unwin.
Chair of Writing Australia council Larissa Behrendt said, ‘Wenona could not be better placed to lead the work of Writing Australia and champion Australian literature. She is a respected leader with extensive networks and in-depth knowledge of both national and global publishing markets.’
Byrne said, ‘I am honoured to step into the role and look forward to working with the Writing Australia Council in creating the first investment strategy for Australian writing. I’m excited to play my part in bringing the incredible work of Australian writers and illustrators to more readers and supporting our dynamic and resilient literature sector.’
The literature funding body Writing Australia was launched on 1 July 2025, along with the announcement of its council members.
