Cinemas are great, but thanks to technology, creating the big screen experience at home is easier than ever, and it’s not just sizeable TV screens helping out. You can easily turn to the familiar favourite that is the projector to get the big picture, and these days, you don’t even need the extra room projectors have typically required.

Short throw projectors and ultra-short throw projectors offer a way to set the picture right against the wall and have a huge screen appear in the right place.

Think of them as projectors that may as well be TVs, because that is largely what they are. Using a laser projection system, this special breed of projectors is often called a “laser TV”, even though it’s basically a laser projector with a TV component inside.

Not all laser projectors are laser TVs, and the point of distinction is normally a DVB-T port and connection. Otherwise, it’s all roughly the same: a laser projector built with an auto-optimising keystone adjustment system designed to show big pictures at short throwing distances. Some are Full HD, but most these days are 4K, and some will be better than others.

Epson’s latest is looking to fit in that last category with a rather unique point of difference: sound by Bose.

For its EH-LS970B projector, the system includes a Bose speaker system built into the unit, similar to a soundbar, covering a 2.1 channel system with support for Bluetooth.

The projector uses a 3LCD colour system with a laser light source covering up to 20,000 hours, and delivering a 4K picture in HDR. There’s a dedicated processor for that last part and up to 4000 lumens brightness on both the colour and white, with AI image enhancement there for increasing sharpness, as well.

You won’t find a terrestrial TV connection here (which means it’s not a laser TV), but you will find Google TV built directly in, with support for Netflix, Disney+, and other apps. Google Assistant is also a part, with voice control offered on the projector, as well.

The screen size is a staggering 150 inches, translating to nearly 4 metres (3.81m) of size, handy if you have the room and want a picture to overtake it.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the price is on the high side, with the Epson EH-LS970B available for over $6000 in Australia, priced at $6399 locally, while New Zealanders can expect it for $7499 across the pond.
