Caine announced on social media on Tuesday that he would be taking a break from his media roles to focus on his health, revealing he had been “struggling”.

“Hey Rock solids. Just want to be upfront and honest,” he wrote.

“We aren’t robots, My turn right now. Struggling, never thought it would be me, but it is.

“Anyone feeling like me I’m sending you a BIG CUDDLE. I’m good but need some time, back soon on @GetEmOnside_SB & @JoelFletchSEN.”

In a statement, SEN said: “Caine told the network today that he needed some time away from the microphone to work on his ongoing health.

“The network respects Caine’s decision and will continue to support him through this time.”

“Joel is a much loved on-and-off-air figure on the SEN 1170am and SENQ 693am airwaves,” SEN boss Craig Hutchison said.

“He has made the strong decision to focus on his health for a period of time, and we respect that courage and honesty to speak up, seek support and take a break.

“We’ll continue to work with our mate, Joel, to support him throughout this period.”

SEN said a temporary host of The Run Home will be announced in due course.

Caine played 127 games during his professional rugby league career including a stint at the Tigers, and finished his career playing in the Super League.

The 47-year-old received an influx of messages of support from his listeners and fans across the rugby league community.

One person commented: “Takes a lot to say you aren’t ok. Look after yourself and hope things get better soon for you.”

A second said: “Back at you mate…time for you to be selfish. Take care”

Another said: “Always good to put your hand up when struggling, plenty of support and help out there, and on here too mate. Happy to help you through this mate. Step by step. Hang in there brother.”

David Packwood wrote: “Take care Joel. In your time mate, just remember you’ve got lots of love around you. Wishing you all the best.”

After retiring from football, Caine has transitioned into a successful media career, working with Channel 9, 2GB radio, Sporstbet, Fox Sports and SEN.

The 2026 NRL season begins on Sunday in Las Vegas, with Newcastle playing North Queensland and the Bulldogs taking on the Dagons.
