Politico will launch in Australia later this year, following the political publication’s recent expansion into Europe and wider America.
According to Semafor, the publication will launch its “Canberra playbook” later this year, then will expand its editorial and business teams.
Politico CEO Goli Sheikholeslami told Semifor that Australia is the “logical next choice” for the publication as it is an English-speaking nation with a large number of existing Politico readers.
“In other markets we have competitors. In Australia there are a couple people that do something similar to what we do,” she said.

“But from what we’ve been able to glean, no one is doing exactly what Politico is about, which is policy, intelligence, and covering politics and policy from a vertical perspective in a really deep way.
“It also made me think: We should fill the space before someone else does.”
Politico’s editorial director Ryan Heath, who led the expansion into Brussels, will oversee the Australian expansion.
“Australians need journalism that both explains power dynamics and connects the dots globally,” Heath said in a statement.
“In this era of great power and technology upheavals, Politico’s ability to examine Australia’s most important security and trade relationships is unrivalled. We take politicians and policy seriously – it’s all we do.
“We will bring that depth and new angles to political journalism in Canberra, just as we have everywhere else we operate.”
