It’s been many centuries since it was humanly possible to read everything that was worth reading. But what humans can no longer do, machines can now do. The most advanced AI models today have read pretty much everything worth reading. And the results of being so well read are impressive and are transforming the world’s economy.
But we shouldn’t confuse this with intelligence. We’re not used to how much you can solve when you can retrieve information from terabytes of training data. We’re impressed, for example, that AI models can ace a medical school entrance exam. But if you look closely, the medical questions being asked are often close to those in the training data. The tech companies don’t make it easy to see this, by not being transparent about what their models are trained on.
