UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier believes Khamzat Chimaev would fit like a glove in the UFC’s light heavyweight division if he makes the move.

UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev eyes a potential second world title before defending his current 185-pound belt.

Chimaev, who won the UFC middleweight championship by defeating Dricus du Plessis at UFC 319 last year, has repeatedly teased a move to 205 pounds in recent days. While he hasn’t competed at 205 pounds in his professional MMA career, he’s confident he can move to light heavyweight with ease and give Alex Pereira a brutal battle.

UFC CEO Dana White has repeatedly expressed disinterest in allowing Chimaev to move to light heavyweight before defending the middleweight belt. But one former UFC light heavyweight champ believes Chimaev moving to 205 pounds would be a perfect fit.

Daniel Cormier: Khamzat Chimaev got the better of Luke Rockhold, Khalil Rountree Jr.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, former UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier endorsed Chimaev moving to 205 pounds after watching him work with a pair of divisional legends.

“So I thought that if Khamzat was to fight at 205, he’d be running against guys who would be just too big for him. At some point, that has to become an issue. Then I saw a video of him sparring with Khalil Rountree,” Cormier said of Chimaev.

“His back looked massive, looks like a 205-pound fighter already! And then I watched a video of him sparring with Luke Rockhold, who is all of 6’4”, 220 pounds right now…Khamzat Chimaev looked just as big, if not bigger. You watch him and Khalil Rountree striking, and it looks to me like Khamzat is winning the striking. He’s kicking with the same power as Luke.

“I’ve got to be honest, I don’t know that this kid couldn’t fight at 205 pounds.”

Cormier then took things a step further in matching Chimaev up with the UFC’s current light heavyweight champ Alex Pereira.

“When you look at Alex Pereira, he’s huge, massive, but he still doesn’t wrestle. He’s shown takedown defense, and if he hits you he can put you out completely, you’re done,” Cormier said of a potential Chimaev vs. Pereira fight.

“But we’ve seen what Khamzat has done to guys without wrestling backgrounds.”
