SYDNEY- Qantas (QF) will end Airbus A380 operations on the Melbourne (MEL) – Los Angeles (LAX) route from 24 October 2026, replacing all services with Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

At the same time, the airline will increase Airbus A380 frequencies on Sydney (SYD) – Singapore (SIN) during the Northern winter 2026 to 2027 season, raising overall capacity on the key Asia route.

Qantas Cuts A380 to Los Angeles

Qantas will standardize operations on the Melbourne to Los Angeles corridor with the Boeing 787-9 from 25 October 2026. The current mix of two weekly Airbus A380 flights and five weekly 787-9 services will shift to seven weekly 787-9 frequencies, AeroRoutes reported.

The change marks the withdrawal of the A380 aircraft from Melbourne to Los Angeles after 24 October 2026. The updated schedule for the period 14 December 2026 to 12 March 2027 is as follows:

QF93 MEL 23:15 – 18:40 LAX operated by 787-9, daily

QF94 LAX 22:50 – 09:30 +2 days MEL operated by 787-9, daily

The move reflects a fleet optimization strategy, aligning capacity with demand while maintaining daily nonstop connectivity between Victoria and Southern California.

The 787-9 offers lower operating costs and improved fuel efficiency compared to the larger A380, making it suitable for consistent year-round demand on this route.

According to AeroRoutes, these aircraft changes form part of Qantas’ broader Northern winter 2026 to 2027 schedule update.

Expanded A380 Presence on Sydney to Singapore

While the A380 exits the Melbourne to Los Angeles market, Qantas will increase superjumbo deployment on the Sydney to Singapore route, Aeroroutes flagged.

From 7 December 2026, A380 frequencies between Sydney and Singapore will rise from nine to thirteen weekly. This total includes seven weekly services that continue onward to London Heathrow. From 11 February 2027, A380 operations will further increase to fourteen weekly flights.

The planned operations include:

QF81 SYD 12:00 – 17:30 SIN operated by A330 four times weekly

QF81 SYD 12:00 – 17:30 SIN operated by A380 four times weekly

QF1 SYD 16:15 – 21:35 SIN operated by A380 daily

Return services:

QF2 SIN 19:40 – 06:35 +1 day SYD operated by A380 daily

QF82 SIN 21:00 – 07:55 +1 day SYD operated by A330 four times weekly

QF82 SIN 21:00 – 07:55 +1 day SYD operated by A380 four times weekly

The increase strengthens Sydney’s role as a primary long-haul hub and supports onward connectivity to Europe. The higher A380 frequency also signals sustained premium and long-haul demand on the Kangaroo Route via Singapore.

Strategic Implications for Qantas Network

The fleet adjustment shows a clear distinction in Qantas’ network planning. Melbourne to Los Angeles will rely on right sized twin engine aircraft, while Sydney to Singapore and London will continue to justify high-capacity A380 deployment.

This approach balances operational efficiency with market demand. It also reinforces Sydney’s position as the airline’s primary international gateway for ultra-long-haul and Europe-bound traffic.
