Bastion and Engineers Australia will launch ‘In Her Corner’ at the season opening Australian Grand Prix on International Women’s Day.
Globally, F1 circuits are steeped in heritage, with corners named after motorsport legends. But none have recognised the women shaping the sport through engineering excellence—until now. For the first time in Formula 1 history, a corner will be named after women.
Originated by Bastion and developed in partnership with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, In Her Corner will see Turn 6 at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit renamed in honour of two engineers: Laura K. Müller, race engineer at TGR Haas F1 Team and Hannah Schmitz head of race strategy at Oracle Red Bull Racing & Red Bull Technology.
The initiative builds on Bastion’s three-year partnership with Engineers Australia under its Making Life Happen platform. With just 13 per cent of engineers in Australia women, Engineers Australia challenged Bastion to make engineering the most talked about profession in the country.
As the pinnacle of engineering performance and innovation, the Formula 1 offered cultural relevance at scale. By launching in the lead up to International Women’s Day, Bastion has placed Engineers Australia in a position of strength, putting the profession at the centre of conversation.
Turn 6 will also feature the Engineers Australia ‘In Her Corner’ Grandstand and an Innovation Hub. It will showcase how engineers make motorsport happen and creating a direct pathway for students and fans to see themselves in the profession.
In addition to the on-track activity, there is a ticketed In her Corner event on Thursday with panel discussions involving Müller and Schmitz including global F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali discussing the importance of representation in motorsport and engineering.
Simon Langley, chief creative officer at Bastion said: “It is not often you have the opportunity to create something that genuinely shifts culture. In Her Corner is more than a naming rights moment. It is a statement for change. Partnering with Engineers Australia and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation to make history at Formula 1 is exactly the kind of impact we believe brands should be making.”
Richard Riboni general manager brand and marketing Engineers Australia said: “In Her Corner puts women engineers in the spotlight at one of the most visible and celebrated engineering arenas in the world.
“By working with Bastion and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, we are not only celebrating extraordinary talent, we are showing the next generation that they belong in this profession. This initiative reflects our commitment to building a more diverse and inclusive engineering workforce and to leading that change from a position of strength.”
