Samsung launched the Galaxy S26 and S26+ with its in-house Exynos 2600 chipset in most markets. The new chip introduces the Visual Perception System (VPS), an AI-powered system that helps improve the camera performance. According to the company, the goal is to deliver better photos with less effort. Here’s how the system works.

Smartphone cameras have improved a lot over the years. It’s no longer just the sensor capturing light and the processor cleaning up the image before showing it on the screen. Modern phones are becoming smarter, thanks to AI, and VPS on the Galaxy S26’s Exynos 2600 is another example. Instead of just processing images after you press the shutter, the camera continuously analyzes the scene before and during the shot.
This means the phone can recognize faces, motion, lighting conditions, and even different parts of the image in real time. The AI system can detect faces, eye blinks, and facial expressions. If someone blinks during a photo, the phone can intelligently combine frames from multiple shots to create a better final image where everyone’s eyes are open. This reduces the need to retake photos multiple times.
The Exynos 2600 also improves how cameras process multiple frames. Instead of relying on a single image, the phone analyzes several frames from the camera preview and merges them. This helps improve detail, brightness, and noise reduction, especially in low light or scenes with movement. AI can even treat different parts of an image separately. For example, skin tones can look smoother while hair and fine details remain sharp.
Another advantage of the new VPS system is efficiency. Because it is a dedicated subsystem designed specifically for camera AI tasks, it can process images in real time while using less battery power. This allows features like advanced face detection, motion tracking, and scene analysis to run continuously without draining the phone.
While VPS may be specific to the Exynos 2600, Galaxy S26 units running Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor are expected to offer similar improvements in photography technology. The S26 Ultra runs the Qualcomm chip globally, while the base S26 and S26+ also feature the Snapdragon processor in the US and select other markets.
