Reed Mahoney reportedly came face to face with his former Bulldogs teammates in Las Vegas, making comments towards one player that caught the ire of the Canterbury squad.

According to the SMH, the encounter took place at a Las Vegas nightclub after the weekend’s games.

Mahoney reportedly made remarks to winger Marcelo Montoya that angered the winger and the majority of the playing group.

Now the confrontation is reportedly an “open secret” within the Canterbury club, who have opted not to comment publicly on the matter.

Elsewhere, Knights enforcer Trey Mooney reportedly was ready to confront the Dragons and captain Clint Gutherson in a separate incident prior to the Las Vegas games.

Dragons security reportedly stepped in to ensure Mooney could not get close to the squad, and it remains unclear why the prop was angered.

The NRL reportedly have no concerns around the incident as no physical confrontation took place.

Mahoney, meanwhile, joined the Cowboys ahead of the 2026 season, having been demoted to the bench under Cameron Ciraldo last year in favour of Bailey Hayward.

Mahoney was given permission to leave the Canterbury club in 2025 despite having another year on his contract, having also been replaced as captain by Stephen Crichton in years prior.

The 27-year-old has stated publicly he remains unsure as to why he was shown the door at the Bulldogs club, having enjoyed a strong debut for North Queensland in Las Vegas.

“If you find out, tell me,” he said to the SMH when asked why he was released.

“I’m not sure. Everyone has their own opinion. I won’t say too much.”

Ciraldo also had his say on Mahoney’s exit on Josh Mansour’s Unscripted podcast.

“He’s got my number too, he can ring me any time… it was less about Reed and more about how good Bailey Hayward was going, we just couldn’t hold him back,” he said.
