Impact the key for MRP

That’s the point re. Harris Andrews. Frampton ‘deliberately’ hits Owens in the throat as opposed to accidental by Andrews and only through good luck didn’t injure him severely . So deliberate , high contact , low impact what does he get ?

– Phillip

Billy Frampton of the Magpies fends off on Mitch Owens of the Saints during the AFL Opening Round match between St Kilda Saints and Collingwood Magpies at Melbourne Cricket Ground, on March 08, 2026, in Melbourne, Australia.Billy Frampton’s fend was probably a free kick, but it was no concussion for Mitch Owens (Getty Images)

Phillip,

I’m not sure of how the table works out – but I suspect the deliberate is negated by the low impact.

The difference is that Andrews threw back a full-blooded elbow, and caused a concussion. That impact was severe.

The Frampton incident was probably a free kick, but that’s a week at most, and Mitch Owens histrionics tend towards the lower end of the spectrum.

19m agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 9:31amHT: St Kilda leads Collingwood by 2, 5.7 (37) to 5.5 (35)

The siren sounds to end a frustrating second term.

The Saints kicked three goals to one, but it’s been hard work for both sides.

Ten goals for the half combined, we are not looking to end the weekend with another shootout.

The Saints have had 31 inside 50s to 18, but their big win in that second quarter was putting a slight curb on Nick Daicos, who was threatening to take the game away for the Pies.

Wanganeen-Milera was having a quiet one before he popped up with the go-ahead goal.

Who will seize control in the second half? Hang around to find out.

Magpies close in with goal to Schultz

That was needed for Collingwood, as Lachie Schultz kicked the Pies’ fifth of the night to bring the score within two points deep in time on.

Collingwood defence holding for now

The Saints are racking up the inside 50s, and putting the Pies under pressure, but it seems to be largely long bombs to the square / pocket / hotspot.

The Collingwood defence are holding strong so far, with several intercept marks.

Have St Kilda left some points out there tonight?

Cooper Sharman extends the lead for the Saints

That was tough for the Pies there, they got caught at the back, and Billy Frampton was pinged for incorrect disposal.

Cooper Sharman converted the kick, and the Saints are out to a nine-point lead.

Wanganeen-Milera gets a goal for the Saints

Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera has just come back on the ground after a long conversation with the coaches box on the sidelines.

The Saints have been struggling to get chances in this second term, but they got one there.

A break through the middle, and a set of handballs got it out, but the key kick turned into an up-and-under, it bounces around, the Saints ran on and handballed to NAS, and he steadied and kicked the goal!

There was a bit of luck in that one, but Ross Lyon won’t care.

The Saints lead again by three points.

When will Pendles return?

Collingwood seems to be employing a definite tactic, leaving Scott Pendlebury (and Jordan De Goey) as impact players on the bench for the first 15-20 minutes of quarters.

Neither are back on yet in the second term.

Great move for the Saints – but no goal

What a great almost-goal that was for St Kilda!

The Saints burst down the wing, as Jack Higgins handballed back inboard to the onrushing Darcy Wilson.

Wilson then turned on the burners and left Billy Frampton behind him, and the crowd roared as he laced down the wing.

The Premier League-style cross bounced in the square past a Pies defender and came to Liam Ryan, but he couldn’t control it and it bounced over the line for a point.

Mitch Owens kicks a point

That’s an interesting moment of play.

The Saints are kicking it around the 50 trying to find a mark or opening.

They kick it long across to the right forward pocket, it bounces and Billy Frampton attempts the fend.

Mitch Owens is hit in the neck or throat, and … his reaction is worthy of a Hollywood movie.

But he gets the free – the Pies fans are NOT happy.

Owens slides the kick wide across goal for a point.

There are four points in it.

St Kilda get the fast start through Mitch Owens

Well the Saints have the start they wanted. They went forward from the get-go, the ball went forward and looked like a mark but it was pulled away.

A free was given, but Mitch Owens grabbed the ball and snapped the goal. Advantage is paid, and that’s a goal in 29 seconds!

It’s back to five points.

Daicos vs Wanganeen-Milera

In terms of metres gained, Nick Daicos has 204 metres in the first quarter – Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera has 110. Possessions are 13 to 7.

That was the old quarter of two halves at the MCG.

The Saints had the better of the opening exchanges, but Collingwood has hauled themselves back and overhauled the Saints with some brilliant play.

Nick Daicos has a lazy 13 disposals at the first break, his brother Josh has 11, Jordan De Goey has two goals and Scott Pendlebury has three goal assists.

The Pies fans are more than happy with the state of affairs. Can they go on with it?

59m agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 8:51am

Dan McStay boots another for the Magpies

This is irresistible stuff from Collingwood right now.

The Daicos brothers are both having their own ball, but in any case the ball goes forward yet again and this time Dan McStay gets his foot to it and bounces it through from 30m out.

That’s four on the bounce for the Pies!

Collingwood have three in a row and hit the front

The Magpies are looking very dangerous all of a sudden in time on.

They rush it forward again, Pendlebury handballs inbound to Lachie Schultz but he gets coathangered by a Saints defender.

Schult kicks the goal, and that’s three in a row for Collingwood and they lead by five points!

1h agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 8:45am

De Goey grabs another and the Pies are lifting

What a great move from Collingwood!

They force the turnover in the midfield, and who else but Nick Daicos darts forward to put the Saints on the defensive.

He finds Scott Pendlebury, who handballs forward to Jordan De Goey – and he snaps his second.

The Pies fans are up and about!

There’s a point in it.

Big miss for St Kilda

The Saints were nearly in again there, they swept to the edge of 50, the ball was handballed out to Jack Carroll, but his kick was wayward.

That’s disappointing. The Saints need to maximise their return from all these inside 50s (eight so far).

1h agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 8:39am

De Goey answers for the Magpies

All right, the Magpies are in business!

They kick the ball across 50 from the right forward pocket, it comes off hands and is half-cleared, only for Jordan De Goey to grab the ball, spin and kick on the turn.

It’s a beautiful finish, and the Collingwood fans roar at the MCG.

Back-to-back goals for the Saints

St Kilda are having more of the ball right now, and they are starting to make it pay.

They went long inside 50 there to the hotspot, and Billy Frampton and Darcy Cameron were outpointed by Cooper Sharman, who took a clean mark and kicked the goal.

St Kilda leads 2.3 to 0.2 nearing the halfway mark of the first quarter.Â
