Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson has informed the team management to release him ahead of the upcoming IPL 2026 auction, ESPNcricinfo reported. He conveyed his decision to the management following the conclusion of the 2025 season.Â
However, Rajasthan has not given Sanju a definitive answer and will try to convince the player to remain with the team, the report said. The final decision will be taken by the franchise’s lead owner, Manoj Badale, in coordination with head coach Rahul Dravid.
If Rajasthan Royals choose to part ways with Sanju, they have the option to either trade him to another franchise or release him into the auction pool. According to IPL regulations, the final decision in such matters rests with the franchise. In the case of a trade, it could involve either a player exchange or a cash-only deal.
IPL teams, including Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, are reportedly interested in including Sanju in their squads. Rajasthan have another two months to make a decision on their captain before the IPL retention deadline in November, the report added.
Kerala’s star player missed five of Rajasthan’s matches last season and played in only 9 out of the 14 due to injury. Riyan Parag had deputised for Sanju, and the team finished ninth in the league with just four wins.
Sanju is also part of the pool of players shortlisted for selection in the Indian squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. Ahead of the tournament, he will also play in the Kerala Cricket League for the Kochi Blue Tigers.
