The Albanese government has put tech giants and data centre operators on notice about complying with Australian values and interests when deploying artificial intelligence or face a decade of reactionary regulation.

With public anger growing around the world about the rapid expansion of data centres and fears about the consequences of the widespread use of AI, Assistant Technology and Digital Economy Minister Andrew Charlton has warned AI labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic not to make the same mistakes as social media giants.
