A man has been remanded in custody charged with murder following the alleged stabbing of another man at a campsite in north-west New South Wales.

Daniel Mark Kilkeary, 43, made no application for bail at a bail court hearing this morning.

Police said they were called to a campsite off Danglemah Road, Woolbrook, about 66 kilometres north-east of Tamworth, at 6pm yesterday following reports of a stabbing.

It is alleged two men were involved in an altercation that resulted in a man, believed to be in his 50s, being stabbed several times in the chest and neck.

NSW paramedics treated the man, however, he died at the scene.

The victim has yet to be formally identified.

Police said the men were known to each other.

During the bail court hearing, defence solicitor Osman Samin requested his client be provided with mental health assistance whilst in custody.

Mr Kilkeary will next appear before Tamworth Local Court in late April.
