Streaming giant prefers marquee events over sports seasons.
Netflix will not be bidding for the upcoming NRL broadcast rights, according to the Australian Financial Review.
The streaming giant has more interest in marquee sporting events rather than entire seasons.
“Anytime those things come up, we certainly look at it, and sometimes the leagues are willing to create a package that makes the most sense for us” global sports executive, Brandon Riegg, has said in an interview.
“We need to curate sporting events that feel like they drive real urgency … because what you’re doing is you’re picking that over Bridgerton or Stranger Things on a given night,” Riegg said.
Whilst that could theoretically place State of Origin on the table, it also falls under the Anti-Siphoning rules, meaning no exclusivity.
The Australian Rugby League Commission led by chair Peter V’landys hopes to secure a new broadcast deal worth more than $4b in the next three months.
The current NRL broadcast rights, held by Nine and Foxtel, expire at the end of the 2027 season.
