As part of the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation, TasWater will be closing the city-end of the Intercity Cycleway next week to remove several large trees alongside for the new pipeline.

The closure will be between the Tasman Bridge and Regatta Grounds car park from Monday 16 to Friday 20 March, between 9 am and 4 pm. The cycleway will be open outside those times.

While people going to and from the north can detour from Bay Street via Letitia and  Argyle/Campbell streets, it’s trickier for people coming over the Bridge, especially as the ferry doesn’t run during the day as an alternative.

The closure pretty much rules out road bikes on the bridge if you’re heading south unless you want to brave riding on the Tasman Highway.

The detour for the bridge involves crossing the slip lane off the highway that connects to the Domain Highway, and onto a rough gravel path that runs alongside the Queens Domain and connects into gravel paths.

Some of the gravel paths are difficult to ride, especially the transitions at Lower Domain Road and Davies Avenue, so you may have to get off and walk in places.

Taswater has apologised for the inconvenience to riders.

“We understand the Intercity Cycleway is a valued community facility, and we appreciate your patience as we deliver this important infrastructure upgrade for Hobart’s future.”

The dates and times of the closure may be changed if weather conditions require it.
