Spoilers for this season of ‘Dexter’
Every episode of this season’s Dexter: Resurrection feels like sweeps week, with each installment teeing up a killer (literally) guest star for Dexter to dispatch. In episode four, he took out Neil Patrick Harris’s sadistic tattoo artist. Last week, Krysten Ritter’s Lady Vengeance ended up in handcuffs. This week, Dexter sets his sights on David Dastmalchian’s Gemini Killer — but there’s a wicked twist.
Quick recap: Blessing’s mother, Prudence, passes away, providing an opportunity for Dexter and Harrison to attend the wake together. The event goes smoothly; father and son bond upstairs, seemingly back on track — except for one looming problem: the Gemini Killer likes to target father/son duos. While at the wake, Prater (Peter Dinklage) calls Dexter, saying he’s at Dexter’s apartment, but Dexter’s nowhere to be found. (Prater still believes Dexter is Red, the Dark Passenger Killer.) Dexter offers a solid excuse — he’s moved out to protect his identity — and Prater arranges a meeting with the rest of the serial killer cabal to discuss Mia/Lady Vengeance’s arrest.
Meanwhile, back at the station, Mia’s intended victim, Marc, gives Detective Wallace new information that makes her question whether Mia really killed Ryan Foster. Enter Batista, who fuels those doubts with his theory: Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher, and Harrison killed Foster. Wallace and Batista can’t connect all the dots — like how Foster’s watch ended up at Mia’s house — but they agree to interrogate Mia the next morning. One conversation with her will shatter Dexter and Harrison’s whole charade.
Back at Prater’s, the group voices their paranoia about Mia, but Charley (Uma Thurman) makes sure she’s eliminated before she can talk. She arranges for a prison guard to hang Mia in her cell overnight. Just like that, the threat is gone — and Wallace and Batista are left without a suspect to question. Luckily for Dexter, no one’s thought to tail Harrison … yet.
Later, Dexter follows Gareth into a bookstore, but Gareth catches on. That afternoon, he shows up at Dexter’s apartment. Dexter quickly plays it cool, flattering Gareth and claiming to be a superfan. Gareth, arrogant and smug, buys it. He even brags about being number one on the FBI’s Most Wanted list — right as Dexter slips something into his drink.
Dexter preps the apartment for a quiet kill (Blessing and family are still upstairs), and soon after, he drives a knife into Gareth. But just as he does, Blessing knocks on the door. Dexter scrambles, hides the body in the bathroom, and lets Blessing in. Blessing apologizes for being rude earlier, creating a tense, suspenseful sequence — but he eventually leaves, unaware of the corpse in the tub. Dexter burns the body in his favorite incinerator.
The next day, Dexter shows up for a scheduled helicopter ride with Prater and Al (Eric Stonestreet). They awkwardly wait for Gareth, who — as far as Dexter knows — is definitely not showing up. But just before takeoff, Gareth strolls up and hops into the chopper.
Wait, what?
That’s when Dexter — and all of us — realize the truth: Gareth is the Gemini Killer … because he’s a twin. That’s not Gareth. It’s his brother. And now we know David Dastmalchian isn’t done yet — though his character will be furious when he finds out Dexter killed his twin.
Four episodes remain, and presumably four kills: Gareth’s brother, Al, Charley, and, inevitably, Prater — because there’s no way Dexter survives this season with Peter Dinklage’s character still breathing. Oh, and someone may need to handle Batista and Wallace, too. They’re not dropping their (accurate) theory that Harrison killed Ryan Foster and Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher.
Prater is going to be so excited to learn the truth — right before Dexter puts him down. Given Prater’s obsession with the best of the best serial killers, he might even feel grateful to go out under Dexter’s knife. What a spectacularly fun season!
