Alex Johnston has made history, breaking the record for the most tries in the NRL/NSWRL.

Venues NSW and the NRL’s attempt to stop fans running onto the field failed, with Johnston swarmed and most of the field covered by people, bringing the game to a lengthy halt amid wild celebrations.

Johnston scored a runaway try to make it 213 for his career, sparking immediate chaos from fans.

Even Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made his way onto the field.

Albanese is South Sydney’s No.1 ticket holder and has been a fan for life. He was previously a director on the club’s board.

Security at first attempted to stop some of the fans but it was to no use in an iconic moment for rugby league.

“I know it’s not the right thing at the moment for the players, but this is a one-off,” Brad Fittler said on Nine.

“This is the only time this will happen in their life.”

Andrew Johns added: “They’ll be talking about this for 100 years.”

Johnston had scored in the first half to equal Irvine’s record and then made history immediately after the break when the Rabbitohs were down 12-6 against the Roosters.

David Fifita broke the line before a set of passes found Latrell Mitchell who pushed ahead to the 40 metre line.

Johnston then ran away to write himself in the history books.

Ironically, the first fan to jump on Johnston was wearing a Roosters jersey. Security pushed him away but they couldn’t hold back the tide.

Rabbitohs players protected Johnston as the crowd swarmed but eventually the winger soaked up the moment and beat his chest as he was lofted in the air.

“What a moment for him … these scenes are incredible,” Billy Slater said.

Two minutes into the celebration, security and Cameron Murray helped Johnston to the sheds, where he was joined by teammates, while officials tried to get the crowd to disperse form the field.

As time dragged on, Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett was seen delivering a passionate message to his side. Bennett had previously said he didn’t want fans swarming the field.

Bennett notably pointed to Johnston as his team talk in the sheds ended.

The dressing room cameras then showed Johnston putting on a special jersey that had a gold coloured number two on his back.

Play returned 16 minutes later with Mitchell kicking the conversion to make it 12-12.
