WHITE PLAINS, New York (WABC) — An investigation is underway after three people were shot and more than 20 shots were fired in White Plains after a basketball tournament on Thursday night.

It happened on a residential block on Church Street as crowds were dispersing after the annual tournament at Gardella Park.

The crowd had gathered at the park for the semifinals of the Ferris World Ball Tournament.

“As the game broke up, as they were walking up to their cars here on Church Street, one group opened fire on the other,” said White Plains Police Commissioner David Chong.

Police say a 24-year-old woman was shot in the shoulder, a 22-year-old woman was shot in the hand and a 21-year-old man was also shot in the hand.

All three people were taken to the hospital and will be OK.

In recent years, the outdoor summer league has exploded in popularity and has attracted fans from beyond White Plains.

All three victims in the shooting were from the Bronx.

As a result of the shootings, the mayor announced that the championship game of Ferris World Ball that was scheduled to be played at the County Center on Sunday was canceled.

The mayor and the commissioner of Recreation and Parks also announced they are cutting ties with the league after 41 years, saying in a statement:

“The men’s basketball league over the years has grown into a regional draw outstripping the capacity of Gardella Park and the neighborhood it serves. Attempts to mitigate the impact including moving the final game to the County Center have not brought relief. Discussions on discontinuing the league were already underway, last night’s events have accelerated the process.”

No arrests have been made. Police are asking any witnesses or anyone with home surveillance video to come forward to help in the investigation.
