Normal eGFR values can mask an increased risk of kidney failure and death if they fall below the 25th or above the 75th age‑specific percentiles, researchers have found.
A Karolinska Institutet study has analysed seven million annual eGFR measurements, taken over 15 years from 1.1 million Swedes aged 40-100.
The team plotted the overall distributions as well as those for subgroups, such as patients with diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Researchers then used their eGFR distribution charts to develop an online calculator for doctors to quickly enter a patient’s age, sex and eGFR to see where they sit percentile-wise.
