In the 2010 T20 Blast final, Hampshire needed to score a run off the final ball to defeat Somerset and lift the trophy. Daniel Christian swung at one from Theunis de Bruyn and missed. The ball hit his pad, but Christian set off for a leg-bye, completely forgetting that Jimmy Adams had been on as a runner for him.

Christian, Adams, and non-striker Sean Ervine all made it to the crease at the other end. As per the Law, all Somerset needed was to remove the bails at the striker’s end and appeal: the striker being outside his crease would have sufficed. But they did not, and Hampshire won.

Of course, not all batters have been as fortunate when it comes to the run-out, an intriguing aspect of cricket. Of all the “mainstream” modes of dismissal in cricket, it is the only one where the bowler does not get any credit. In 1992, it became the first dismissal type to be decided by the TV umpire.
