A new initiative blending the art of ballet with the science of aged care is set to take centre stage in Claremont this April.
The inaugural Ballet 4 You Teacher’s Workshop will be held on April 18 at Mary Lockett Hall, Christ Church, offering a full day of training for dance teachers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and others interested in using movement to support older adults.
The workshop is the creation of Lisa Purchas, a Claremont-based dance teacher who founded Ballet 4 You in 2017 following the death of her mother, Joanna, from Alzheimer’s disease.
Determined to honour her mother’s memory, Purchas developed a program designed to help people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and early-stage Alzheimer’s improve balance, posture, and strength through modified ballet exercises.
“The program encourages participants to use both sides of the body and brain,” Purchas explained. “It’s not just about movement — it’s about improving cognitive function, gait, and emotional wellbeing.”
Over time, Ballet 4 You has evolved beyond dementia care to include seated classes for all elderly participants, whether in aged care homes, community centres, or private sessions. The program has been praised for its accessibility and its ability to bring joy and confidence to older adults through gentle, structured movement.
The upcoming workshop will feature guest speakers from the aged and geriatric care sectors, as well as hands-on sessions led by Purchas herself. Attendees will learn both seated and barre-based exercises, explore the science behind movement and memory, and receive a comprehensive resource pack including class notes, videos, and a Ballet 4 You T-shirt.
Purchas, who holds Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business and international Relations, has shared her work widely through Rotary talks, media appearances, and international interviews. She also runs the Dancescene Studio in Claremont, where she teaches ballet to students of all ages.
Participants who wish to take their training further can complete an additional intensive session to become registered Ballet 4 You Practitioners, allowing them to deliver the program professionally in aged care and community settings.
The workshop runs from 9.30am to 4pm and costs $550 (including GST), with light refreshments provided.
For many, Ballet 4 You represents more than just dance — it’s a graceful step toward improving quality of life for older Australians.
