Amy Winehouse‘s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil has given a rare and extremely raw interview looking back on his tumultuous relationship with the late singer.

He reflected on being seen as the villain of the piece and the reason she was addicted to drugs, with many pointing the finger at him for her death at the age of 27.

Now, almost 15 years since her passing in July 2011, the actor said he’s not responsible for her death from alcohol but accepts he ”had a part to play”.

“My stance now is that I know a lot of people, especially people reading media 20 years ago, would have an idea that Amy’s passing is my responsibility,” the now 43-year-old said on the We Need To Talk podcast.

“I never shirk from any responsibility – if I’ve done something, I’ll put my hand up to it,”

Fielder-Civil slammed “this idea of daily facilitating. No, I wasn’t the dealer” and said he “would never in a million years have let her just sit and get drunk all day” if he wasn’t in jail at the time of her death.

The actor told host Paul C. Brunson he’s “made peace” with the fact he “had a part to play” in Winehouse’s death but was not responsible for it, adding the singer was a “very strong woman” with her own “agency”.

“That is in no way at all disrespecting her by saying that, but Amy did what she wanted to do,” he clarified.

“And even though the drinking had started to hurt her, she carried on.”

Fielder-Civil says at the time of their relationship, in the early noughties, he was unfairly accused of being the one to introduce Winehouse to drugs.

He alleges she “experimented” with cocaine with an ex-partner before they’d even met.

“I never blamed a person that gave me drugs for the first time,” he said.

“I’ve never tried to put that on anyone. Why would I? That was me. So I never understood, do these people think that I forced Amy to do drugs? That’s just not what happened.”

In the wide-ranging two-hour plus sit-down interview, Fielder-Civil recalled meeting the singer at a Camden pub in 2001 and playing a game of pool together.

He said drugs weren’t really a part of the early days of their relationship and there were normal moments of a young couple, in their early 20s, just in love.

“Our love had nothing to do with addiction, and addiction had nothing to do with our love. That’s where it went. It wasn’t who we were,” he said.

The hit album Back To Black is about their first break-up but the couple got back together and eventually married in 2007.

Fielder-Civil said while they did do drugs around that time, on their big day in Miami they were both “compos mentis” and hadn’t touched any drugs – other than Winehouse toasting their nuptials with a small drink – because they didn’t risk it while abroad.

The couple later divorced in 2009 but remained in touch after that and while Fielder-Civil served time for burglary and possession of a firearm in 2011.

It was while he was in jail that he got the news of the Grammy-winner’s death, a moment he labelled his “worst nightmare”. He was unable to attend her funeral due to being behind bars at the time.

Winehouse died of accidental alcohol poisoning, with no other drugs found in her system.

Fielder-Civil, who is now sober and in a relationship, said he believes if Winehouse were still alive today she too would be clean and they’d likely still be together.
