PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

When it comes to embracing stump camera technology, the perception is that costs will be prohibitive for the average cricket club in the UK.

But, thanks to pioneering firm StumpEye’s completely wireless technology, there are huge savings to be made – and the benefits for players are obvious too.

“The biggest USP in my opinion is the ones we see on TV are a wired setup, but this is completely wireless,” says StumpEye founder and CEO, Mihir Mehta.

“So, for example, our model that has a 10-metre radius is less than 1 percent of the cost of the model that you might be familiar with from watching international cricket on TV because those are wired devices.

“The feedback we get from clients who use our devices, which includes both Surrey and Middlesex, is that they love the quality of the video they get and you really see the intricate details, especially from a batting point of view.

“Surrey use it for first team training, while Middlesex use theirs for age-group squads to look at the techniques too.”

Beyond the county game, illustrious clients of StumpEye include Cricket New South Wales, Oundle School, Mount Kelly School, the Ukrainian Cricket Federation and the Jakarta Cricket Association.

The company has award-winning credentials too, having won the best product award in an ICC Hackathon event that had 22,000 participants from 120 countries.

For schools and recreational clubs, there are obvious benefits to StumpEye cameras, which are easier to set up and transport than traditional tripod cameras – perfect whether you’re playing a home game or taking an international tour.

“The highlight of the feedback we get has been regarding the quality of the match footage it captures, because you can see how certain players performing,” says Mihir.

“Clubs can do post-match analysis because what we’ve done is place the camera higher up than a traditional stump camera.

“We have readymade templates that we offer to the clubs – meeting the ECB criteria for grants =  to apply for the grants of up to £10,000.

“If approved, it would effectively bring down the cost to invest in StumpEye for the clubs to nothing.”

A brand new model with a 300m range – making it controllable from a laptop, clubhouse television or a broadcaster’s box – is set to come out imminently.

And the 10m version, controllable via phone app, is a convincing prospect for leagues and official’s associations.

“With this model, we can potentially try to introduce a version of football’s VAR into the club cricket game,” adds Mihir.

“On-field umpires can look at replays in slow motion, frame by frame.

“But, in this day and age, it can also serve as a tool to protect umpires.

“Anything said and told and heard can be recorded, which is especially important with the 2026 ECB drive for greater inclusion of women officials.”
