Coronation Street actor James Cartwright has spoken about his character Theo Silverton’s latest scheme to keep Todd Grimshaw under his control: by ambushing him with a surprise wedding.

Diving in on Theo’s twisted mindset, Cartwright said Theo is doing it to “give [Todd] no choice”.

“Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, or maybe a Trojan horse is a better analogy,” he said. “Essentially he’s presenting it as this romantic grand gesture, but in springing it on him, he’s making sure that he doesn’t have a choice. He’s absolutely painting him into a corner.

“Another reason he’s springing it on him is so nobody else can torpedo the whole thing and talk Todd out of it. For Theo, the quicker it’s done, the less can be said, it’s almost too late if they’re already married.

“He knows he isn’t popular, he knows Summer’s onto him, he knows George and Christina are onto him, he knows Sarah is a bit suspicious and he doesn’t want anybody to get the opportunity to offer some clarity.
So the quicker he rushes it through, the better.”

Cartwright also stated that there is a small part of Theo that thinks it could backfire, but he is overall pretty confident in his plan.

“I think he’s obviously aware that it’s not normal circumstances, but he’s hoping that the peer pressure and the pure force of him proclaiming his love will be enough”, the actor continued.

“I don’t think he thinks he’s doing a bad thing, villains never do. They think what they’re doing is for the best and other people just don’t understand. Theo honestly thinks ‘we love each other, let’s get married’, then everyone will have to acknowledge that we’re back together and once we’re married, everyone will settle down.

“Once we’re married, they’ll see we love each other, and everything will be fine. However, we can see it’s just completely selfish, self serving and narcissistic.”

However, Theo’s bliss is short-lived as George will soon discover exactly what kind of man he is when Theo unleashes a tirade of abuse at him through a closed door, believing him to be Todd…
