Speaking of his surprise at the reaction of both the judges and the crowd, Paul said: “We just went there in our little car with our little drum kit, and we set our drums up like we do when we do a gig, and then 2,500 people stood up and applauded.
“We didn’t really know how people were going to respond, because the thing with Nancy’s performance is there were no gimmicks.
“It was just Nancy playing the drums really well, and we didn’t know how the crowd would respond to it – and they just went crazy.”
Asked about her favourite part of the whole experience, Nancy said: “I loved it when the drum kit came out and the audience was, like, ‘oh she’s a drummer’.
“But then, I also loved it when Simon was, like, ‘she’s really, really good’.
“At the end I just couldn’t believe that.”
