Hacks officially has a season five release date, but the announcement is bittersweet as it’s also been confirmed that the award-winning HBO comedy series will come to an end with this final batch of episodes.
The beloved show – which centres on the complicated, messy but equally heartwarming relationship between legendary comic Deborah Vance (played by Jean Smart) and her collaborator Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) – will close with 10 new episodes, premiering on Thursday, 9 April at 9pm EST. Hacks airs on HBO in the United States, and can usually be watched across Sky and NOW in the UK.
The first-look teaser for Hacks season five picks up immediately after last season’s jaw-dropping cliffhanger, which saw the world believing that Deborah Vance had died following an inaccurate report in the media. The opening scene of the new footage shows grieving fans setting up a memorial outside of the gate of Deborah’s home, with one of them gasping “she has risen!” at the sight of the icon setting foot out of her car.

The first glimpse at Hacks season five has also given fans a look at The Summer I Turned Pretty breakout star Christopher Briney, who has joined the cast as a new character. Fan-favourites Megan Stalter and Paul W. Downs can also be seen reprising their roles, as well as Carl Clemons-Hopkins and Robby Hoffman among others returning.
Fans had been expecting that Hacks would finish with season five, but the official confirmation is still sad for those of us that love the show. Across its brilliant run, the comedy series has won widespread praise, critical acclaim and a number of awards – including a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Comedy Series, a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, as well as five Golden Globes and nine Primetime Emmy Awards (for the show, and its leading actors and creatives).

Right before taking home the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the most-recent Emmy Awards, Hannah Einbinder confirmed (via Variety) that season five would be where the show came to an end.
“Knowing it’s the last season is really bittersweet,” she said in September. “But I think it’s right, you know? It’s nice to do something as many times as it should be done. Not overstay your welcome. Rip it and do it and laugh and cry.”
And laugh and cry, we all surely will.
Hacks season 5 will return for its final season from 9 April.
