South Sydney will return to Allianz Stadium from next season, striking a deal with the NSW Government and Venues NSW to split home games with Accor Stadium.

After years of back-and-forth, the decision was confirmed on Tuesday night and it will see the Rabbitohs play a total of 21 games at Moore Park between now and 2030.

It means the Bunnies will share a home ground with arch rivals the Sydney Roosters for the first time since 2005 when the club first moved to Olympic Park.

“This is a landmark moment for our club,” Rabbitohs chairman Nick Pappas said.

“This new deal ensures more matches at our spiritual home at Allianz Stadium while retaining our historical connection to Accor Stadium.

“Both venues are an important part of our club’s history and future, and this new deal is a win for our Members and fans who will get to see more home matches in Sydney.

“We would like to thank the NSW Government and Venues NSW for working with us and we’re excited to continue to create history at these venues.”

The full breakdown will see the cardinal and myrtle play seven games each year at Accor Stadium from this year until the end of 2030.

This season, Souths will play two home games at Allianz, before four in 2027 and five for the 2028, 2029 and 2030 seasons.

NSW Premier Chris Minns believes hosting games across the two stadiums will benefit the club and the fans long-term.

“This is a great outcome for NSW and Rabbitohs fans – more Rabbitohs matches at their two spiritual homes, Accor where they broke their grand final drought in 2014 and Allianz at Moore Park, where the club established itself,” he said.

The decision is likely to strike a nerve with the Roosters, who have been adamant that Allianz Stadium was their home since it was reopened in 2022.

Trent Robinson has gone on the record to amplify the “loyalty” shown by the Tricolours as opposed to their local rivals.

“They decided to move away from their area and being loyal to the area has served us really well,” the Roosters coach said last April.

“People rent this ground all the time, it just won’t ever be their home. I don’t think it will get taken down, it’s our home and we’ve been here since 1908 and we haven’t left.

“You don’t talk about loyalty, you show it through action and we’ve shown that through the history of rugby league. Different teams that will play here … but this is our home.”
