Australia is far from a world leader in developing sovereign AI capability. Our levels of federal investment are paltry compared to the billions committed by other middle powers such as Canada, France and Singapore. But even though we missed the first wave of foundational model development, the AI tide does not have to bypass us entirely.
This starts with the government nailing a difficult balancing act. Labor needs to demonstrate to the world’s biggest artificial intelligence companies that Australia is open for business while also demonstrating to the community that it has learnt lessons from the social media era about getting a fair share of the continuing benefits.
