INDIANAPOLIS, IN. – Drexel’s men’s basketball assistant coach Will Chavis has been selected to the 2026 Silver Waves Media Rising Stars Power Lunch. This gathering specifically recognizes up-and-coming coaches poised for future head coaching roles, celebrating individuals who are gaining widespread recognition as impactful leaders and future influencers in college basketball.
Chavis joined the Drexel men’s basketball staff during the summer of 2021. Prior to his role at Drexel, Chavis, a Philadelphia native, amassed valuable experience as a player and coach in various competitive settings. Chavis works with all aspects of the program, actively contributing to the recruitment process, player development and scouting opponents.
Chavis came to Drexel after a successful coaching stint in the Philadelphia Catholic League serving as the head coach at nearby Bishop McDevitt High School, where he coached Justin Moore for one season before the closing of the school. In his four years at the school, Chavis saw his team tie the school record for wins in a season during his first year and break that mark in 2018 and again in 2019. The school’s 21 wins in 2019-2020 were the most in school history. He was named the PCL Coach of the Year and the PIAA 3A PA State Coach of the Year after that historic season.
Chavis was also an AAU Head Coach with WeR1 where he was able to coach and help develop a multitude of players that have gone on to play not only college basketball but in the NBA as well. The most recent being Nah’shon “Bones” Hyland, a first round pick of the Denver Nuggets in 2021 and Isaiah Wong, a Second Round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. He had other stints as a head coach at the Allen Iverson Roundball Classic, with USA and German Select Basketball teams that toured in China. He was also the head coach in the top youth league in Germany (Jungend Basketball Bundesliga) and coached against the likes of Dennis Schroder (L.A. Lakers), Isaiah Hartenstein (N.Y. Knicks) and many other German NBA players. Chavis also served as associate head coach of the Nuremberg Falcons in the 2.Bundesliga in Germany after his playing career ended. After graduating from college, Chavis played professionally for more than 10 years in a number of countries. He spent the majority of his pro career in Germany, but also played in the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Iceland and for brief stretches in both Italy and France.
