The first game of the 2026 MLB season was in the books Wednesday, as the New York Yankees trounced the San Francisco Giants 7-0 on Opening Night — no thanks to reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge, who was the only Yankee to finish the game without a hit. Judge went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts to open the year. Unfortunately for Judge, his lack of production was historic, making him the first reigning MVP to ever earn a golden sombrero in a season opener.
We’ve got 11 more games on tap Thursday, and the night ends with back-to-back appearances by the defending champions and a team that came within a game of last year’s World Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers host the Arizona Diamondbacks with Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the mound before the Seattle Mariners close out the evening against the Cleveland Guardians.

On a day filled with standout debuts from rookies, Chase DeLauter wasn’t going to be left out. The Guardians’ right fielder hit a solo home run off Mariners starter Logan Gilbert in the top of the first.
DeLauter debuted in the 2025 postseason, so that was his first regular-season MLB at-bat.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto is likely done for the night after a scoreless sixth inning. His line: 6 innings, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 0 walks and 6 strikeouts on 95 pitches. A solid start to the season for the reigning World Series MVP.

Gallen opened his start by retiring 12 of 13 batters. Then five straight Dodgers reached base, including the Pages homer, and now he’s out of the game. L.A. still has runners on first and second with no outs as Juan Morillo enters the game to keep the lead at one run.

Andy Pages had quite possibly the worst offensive postseason in the history of MLB last year. He starts this season on a strong note, clubbing a 3-run homer to give the Dodgers the lead in their opener.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Zac Gallen spent the first three innings at Dodger Stadium — ahem, that’s actually Uniqlo Field at Dodger Stadium — trading zeroes, but the D-backs shortstop breaks the scoreless tie with a two-run homer.

With Shohei Ohtani on base after a leadoff single, new Dodgers addition Kyle Tucker very nearly put two runners on with no outs. There was just one problem: Nolan Arenado, who made a diving play for his first out as a member of the D-backs.

The Dodgers’ ring ceremony is scheduled for Friday, but the defending champions still had plenty of ways to celebrate on Opening Day. They unveiled their 2025 championship banner, and also had Freddie Freeman and Miguel Rojas ride in with their 2024 and 2025 trophies alongside Will Ferrell.

The Rangers made the ninth inning more interesting than the Phillies would have preferred.
Kyle Higashioka singled, followed by Josh Jung reaching on a throwing error from Bryce Harper. Philadelphia then brought in closer Jhoan Duran, taking over for Kyle Backhus.
After Ezequiel Duran struck out, Danny Jansen singled to drive in Higashioka. But Evan Carter grounded out to finish the game. Jhoan Duran gets his first save of the season for the Phillies.

The Cardinals have matched the Rays’ 6-run sixth inning and topped it with eight runs in the bottom half of the frame.
The onslaught began with a 2-run single from Nolan Gorman after Alec Burleson singled and Masyn Winn doubled to begin the inning. Following a Jordan Walker ground-rule double, Nathan Church drove in Gorman and Walker to make it a 7-5 game.
Pedro Pagés and Victor Scott II then hit singles and Church was driven in by a JJ Wetherholt sacrifice fly. And Iván Herrera tied the score at 7-7 with a sacrifice fly of his own.
Batting for the second time in the inning, Burleson hit a 2-run homer to give St. Louis a 9-7 lead.
