MASON, OH − The stars were finally out at the Cincinnati Open on Aug. 9 for Round of 64 play, and Aug. 10 will feature similar action as the second round continues.Â
Ten seeded players were upset on Aug. 9, arguably most notably ATP No. 9, Holger Rune, and No. 10, Lorenzo Musetti, and WTA No. 18, Liudmila Samsonova.
On Aug. 10, American WTA No. 2 Coco Gauff, who lost to champion, Victoria Mboko, but won doubles with McCartney Kessler, at the National Bank Open, highlights the day session as the second match on Center Court. She will face China’s Wang Xinyu, who defeated Colombia’s Emiliana Arango in the opening round.Â
Following Gauff, ATP No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz will take the court against Bosnia’s Damir Džumhur, who took down Italy’s Mattia Bellucci in the opening round after winning two tiebreaks.Â
It will be Alcaraz’s first match since he lost in the Wimbledon final to ATP No. 1 and 2024 Cincinnati Open champion, Jannik Sinner.
On Court 3, Madeira, Ohio native Caty McNally, who won her opening match decisively, will feature late in the day session against Kessler, who is ranked No. 32. Â
At night, ATP. No. 3 Alexander Zverev will play wild card Nashesh Basavareddy, who claimed his first Master’s 1,000 victory in a Round of 128 win against lucker loser, Aleksandar Vukic, on Center Court Aug. 8. They will appear on the Grandstand Court.Â
American and ATP No. 6, Ben Shelton, will also feature in the night session. He will match up against Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli on Center Court.Â

American ATP No. 4 Taylor Fritz has defeated American qualifier, Emilio Nava, 6-4, 6-4.
Coming off a semifinal loss to American No. 6, Ben Shelton, at the National Bank Open in Canada, the Cincinnati Open will be Fritz’s final tournament to gain momentum heading into US Open in late August.
Picking up his fifth win this week, French qualifier Terence Atmane defeated Italian ATP No. 22, Flavio Cobolli, to move on to the Round of 32. The 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) match lasted 2 hours, 14 minutes.
Despite making just 44% of first serves, American ATP No. 14, Frances Tiafoe, defeated Roberto Carballes Baena, 6-4, 6-3, to move on to the Round of 32. ATP No. 25, Ugo Humbert, awaits him in the next stage.
“Pretty good from the baseline, some loose errors there, but the service percentage needs to be higher,” Tiafoe said. “It’s not going to be good enough as I advance through the draw.”
After narrowly withstanding a tricky opening set, WTA No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, cruised through the second set to defeat Marketa Vondrousova, 7-5, 6-1.
Sabalenka will face Emma Raducanu in the next round. The two players last matched up at Wimbledon, when the Belarusian defeated the Briton, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
American WTA No. 8 Amanda Anisimova will not have to play tonight despite being scheduled to follow Frances Tiafoe and Roberto Carballes Baena on the Grandstand Court. Her opponent, Leolia Jeanjean, withdrew from the tournament due to a right calf injury, the WTA announced.
Jeanjean was enjoying a solid run that featured a Round of 128 win against Ukrainian Yuliia Starodubtseva after she advanced out of the qualifiers. She said she suffered the injury during the over three-hour match against Starodubtseva.
“I wish my opponent the best for the tournament,” Jeanjean said. “She’s had a really great season so far.”
After pushing WTA No. 34 Anna Kalinskaya to three sets, Mason native Peyton Stearns’ hometown run ended in the Round of 64, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-1.
Kalinskaya booked a trip to the Round of 32, where she will face the winner of American WTA No. 8 Amanda Anisimova and French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean’s match.

WTA No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka fought off six break points before taking the first set against Marketa Vondrousova, 7-5, on her first break opportunity.
She closed the set with a down-the-line backhand into a tight window as Vondrousova approached the net.
Cincinnati native Peyton Stearns and Anna Kalinskaya have gone to a third set in their second-round match and have played more than two hours.
Joao Fonseca upset No. 17 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after Fokina retired in the second set. Fokina won the first set in a tiebreak and Fonseca was leading set two, 5-4.
No. 31 seed Lorenzo Sonego beat Zizou Bergs, 6-3, 7-6(4). Sonego will play the winner of tonight’s match between No. 4 seed Tommy Fritz and Emilio Nava on Center Court.
In the women’s draw, Yue Yuan of China upset No. 14 seed Diana Shnaider, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
Ugo Humbert of France, the No. 20 seed in the ATP tourney, defeated qualifier Coleman Wong, 6-3, 6-4. Humbert will face the winner of tonight’s match between No. 10 seed Frances Tiafoe and Roberto Carballes Baena. Humbert, 27 and World No. 25, had been only 1-4 all-time in Mason before the win.
In the WTA tourney, No. 12 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated Lulu Sun, 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 64. Alexandrova will face Maya Joint in the next round. Alexandrova reached the round of 32 in Mason for the third time and is 0-2 in her previous trips to that round. Alexandrova, a 30-year old from Russia, made the round of 16 at Wimbledon and the French Open.
Emma Raducanu, the No. 30 seed, defeated Olga Danilovic 6-3, 6-2 in the women’s round of 64. Raducanu advances to face tonight’s winner between No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Marketa Vondrousova.

Cincinnati native Peyton Stearns is up next on the Champions’ Court, facing No. 28 seed Anna Kalinskaya.
Also in the women’s draw, Maya Joint upset No. 18 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, Joint, a 19-year old Australian ranked 44th in the world, won a WTA250 event on grass in Eastbourne this summer.
Madison Keys, the No. 6 seed, rallied after losing the first set 6-1, and saved two match points to defeat Eva Lys of Germany, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(1) in front of a large crowd on the Grandstand Court.
Keys, the 2019 Cincinnati Open champion and 2022 semifinalist, faces qualifier Aoi Ito in the round of 32.
Keys won the tiebreak against Lys, 7-1, after a back-and-forth third set. Trailing 6-5, Keys saved two match points to force the tiebreak. Keys took a 5-0 lead in the tiebreak after two very close line calls went her way, confirmed by replay.
While Keys was winning her match, several other matches ended at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
Taylor Townsend, a wild-card entry from the United States, upset No. 13 seed Luidmila Samsonova, 6-2, 6-4. Townsend will next face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who upset No. 21 seed Leylah Fernandez.
Sorana Cirstea knocked off No. 22 seed Magdalena Frech in three sets 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-4).
On the men’s side, qualifier Adrian Mannarino of France upset No. 19 seed Tomas Machac, 6-3, 6-3. Mannarino will face Tommy Paul in the round of 32.
Gabriel Diallo, a University of Kentucky product and the No. 30 seed, beat Sebastian Baez, 7-5, 6-4. Diallo, making his Mason debut, will face Jannik Sinner in the round of 32.
Jannik Sinner, the Wimbledon champion, defending Cincinnati Open champion and World No. 1, rolled over qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan, 6-1, 6-1. Sinner won 57 points only 27 for his opponent, and had 20 winners to eight for Galan as the match ended in 59 minutes. Sinner will next play the winner of today’s later match between No. 30 seed Gabriel Diallo and Sebastian Baez.
Sinner was happy to get acclimated to the heat in Cincinnati. Temperatures were around 90 degrees at match’s end.
“I didn’t know exactly what to expect today, but I’m very happy because it’s not easy to play here,” he said. “The ball is flying, the ball is fast. You have to serve very precise, but also with a good pace here if you want to go far in the tournament. I’m very happy to be back here. The crowd is amazing.
“Before coming on the court, you have to feel the heat, not only in the warmup hits, but also before the match, the physical warmup. Having a little bit of sweat in the body, which is good. It makes it feel like how the conditions really are, so I feel like today everything went in the right direction.”
Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No. 23 seed in the ATP men’s draw, won his round of 64 match over Tomas Martin Etcheverry, 6-2, 7-6(3). The Frenchman, World No. 28, advanced to the quarterfinals in Mason in 2021 and 2022, and to the round of 16 last year.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No. 25 seed, defeated Fabian Marozsan of Hungary, 7-6(3), 6-2. Tsitsipas, 26, from Greece, was 2022 runner-up in Mason and a two-time semifinalist before that. He lost in the round of 32 last year. Tsitsipas, who has 12 career titles, plays Benjamin Bonzi in the third round.
Jessica Bouzas Maneiro upset No. 21 seed Leylah Fernandez in the round of 64, 6-3, 6-3. Maneiro, a Spaniard and World No. 42, advances to the round of 32 here for the second straight year.
American Tommy Paul, the No. 13 seed, rolled through his first match in Mason, 6-2, 6-2, over Pedro Martinez of Spain on Center Court. He will play the winner of today’s later match between No. 19 seed Tomas Machac and qualifier Adrian Mannarino. Paul improved to 6-6 all-time in Mason. He lost to Carlos Alcaraz in three sets in the 2023 round of 16.
Two of the top 11 seeds were knocked off in three sets to start play in the men’s draw in the round of 64.
No. 8 seed Lorenzo Musetti lost to Benjamin Bonzi of France, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(4). Bonzi, World No. 63, lost in the first round in Mason in 2022.
No. 11 seed Casper Ruud lost to Arthur Rinderknech of France, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2. Rinderknech, World. 70, is making his Cincinnati debut.
American Alex Michelsen, the No. 28 seed, prevented a French sweep of seeded players in the opening set of matches. He defeated Corentin Moutet of France, also in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Michelsen, coming off a quarterfinal appearance in Toronto, plays Holger Rune in the third round. Michelsen lost to Jannik Sinner in the round of 32 here in Mason last year.
In the start of women’s doubles action, Magda Linette and Clara Tauson won in three sets over Tereza Mihalikova and Olivia Nicholls, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
The No. 2 seed, Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand, defeated Su-Wei Hsieh and Ena Shibahara, 7-5, 7-5.
Guiliana Olmos and Aldila Sutjiadi defeated Americans Emma Navarro and Margaret Navarro, 6-2, 6-3.
In an All-American first-round matchup, Hailey Baptiste and Jessica Pegula ousted Iva Jovic and Ashlyn Krueger, 6-2, 6-2.
On Center Court, Barbora Krejcikova and Jelena Ostapenko defeated Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(8).
The first upset of the day has happened. Aoi Ito, who reached the main draw through the qualifiers, knocked off No. 27 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the round of 64, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Ito broke her opponent’s serve in the last game to end the match. Ito, a 21-year old from Japan and World No. 94, has advanced to the round of 32 for the second straight tournament from the qualifiers after doing so in Montreal. She will next face the winner of today’s match between No. 6 seed Madison Keys and Eva Lys.
Holger Rune, the No. 7 seed and World No. 9, outlasted Roman Safiullin in the round of 64, 7-5, 7-6(5). In the second-set tiebreak, Rune persevered after his opponent got a lucky bounce off the net to tie the break at 5-5. Rune won the next point on serve, then broke Safiullin’s serve on the next point to end the match.
Rune, 22, was a semifinalist at the Cincinnati Open last year. He advances to the round of 32 where he will face the winner of the ongoing match between No. 28 seed Alex Michelsen and Corentin Moutet.
Iga Swiatek, World No. 3 and the 2025 Wimbledon champion, defeated Anastasia Potapova, 6-1, 6-4. Leading the second set 5-4 and on serve, Swiatek fought off three break points and ended the match on her second match point. Swiatek had 17 winners to only four for her opponent.
“I really wanted to be solid, but pretty intense, on the other hand,” Swiatek said in an oncourt interview. “It was a little bit up and down in (the) second set, but in important moments, I got my level up. First match of the tournament is always tricky and I’m happy that I’m gonna have a chance to play another one.”
Swiatek will face No. 25 seed Marta Kostyuk in the next round. They played in the round of 16 here in Mason last year, with Swiatek winning, 6-2, 6-2. Swiatek is 3-0 against Kostyuk.
Marta Kostyuk, the No. 25 seed, is the day’s first player to advance to round three. She rolled past Tatjana Maria 6-0, 6-1 in the WTA round of 64.
Kostyuk, 23, from Ukraine and World No. 27, is coming off a quarterfinal appearance in Montreal. She reached the round of 16 last year in Mason, losing to Iga Swiatek. Kostyuk has a rematch with Swiatek in the next round.
