Britain’s Got Talent fans were sharply divided tonight as a comedian sailed through to the live semi-finals with the Golden Buzzer. Ted Hill, 31, from London introduced himself to judges Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and KSI, and told them that he his main job was to tour around schools performing shows themed around science.

He said: “I’m here to combine my weird analytical brain with my love of stand-up comedy. I’ve brought my friend Amy with me and I’m ready!” The contestant then acknowledged the live audience. He said: “We’ll address the elephant in the room,” and when a sound effect of an elephant noise played, Alesha cackled with laughter.

He continued: “I am a very autistic man, thank you for noticing. These are some of the things I love – graphs, like a lot of autistic people, and Simon, I am so excited to meet you, and you’re my third favourite person named Simon Cowell!”

Ted Hill got the Golden Buzzer on BGT – but viewers were divided

He then brought up a chalkboard graphic with the name Simon Cowell written on it three times, promising to send the judge to the top spot if he sent him through.

He claimed that his favourite Simon Cowell was someone who existed in the 1830s, and Amanda was in stitches as a black-and-white photo of Simon’s face photoshopped onto a Victorian boy popped up.

Ted then set about rewriting the phonetic alphabet, as Ant and Dec applauded from the wings. Simon said: “He’s actually funny,” and the audience applauded as Amanda wiped tears of joy from her eyes.

She said: “That has blown my mind, it was completely unexpected, and so intelligent,” as Ant and Dec snuck up behind her to press the Golden Buzzer, meaning he will be performing live for the nation, and in the hopes of winning a spot at the Royal Variety, later in the competition. But viewers at home weren’t all convinced that he deserved the “life-changing” moment.

But others were pleased to see Ted make it through after being impressed by his routine. One said: “Bloody love that comedian on #bgt so glad they pressed the gold!!! He was brilliant,” whilst another said: “Cheers @antanddec – didn’t expect to be happy crying on a Saturday night!”
