A son refused to carry the cost of his mother’s choices.
Evan, calling from Kansas City, Kansas, told “The Ramsey Show” his mother burned through a $400,000 inheritance and now needs nursing home care. “I don’t want to pay for it,” he said.
He told personal finance host Dave Ramsey and co-host Rachel Cruze, his 62-year-old mother’s health was deteriorating, and his siblings wanted to discuss placing her in a nursing home over Thanksgiving.
He said he was on track to become debt-free within six months but was struggling with how to approach the situation.

Evan said his mother inherited the money from his grandparents five years earlier, but nearly all of it was gone after her spending and money taken by siblings. “She’s pretty well squandered all her money her whole life,” he said.
He said her health issues were largely tied to severe obesity. “She got so heavy at one point her knee started to hurt, and instead of losing weight she bought an electric wheelchair,” he said, and her condition kept getting worse. His sister lived with her and could no longer take care of her.
Evan said the house might sell for about $20,000, and a campground site could bring in a few thousand dollars, but that money would not last long.

With Thanksgiving approaching, Evan said his siblings wanted to talk about placing their mother in a nursing home, but none of them could afford to pay for that care. He said he was set to deploy to Europe shortly after the holiday, leaving him away as the family decided what to do next.
“It puts a knot in your stomach. On the one hand you got her misbehavior. And on the other hand it’s your mom,” Ramsey said.
Ramsey’s advice was direct. “We’re going to Medicaid,” he said.
He said the family should study Medicaid rules before Thanksgiving, including which assets would have to be sold and any exceptions. He said the campground would likely need to be sold, while Social Security would also factor into how her care was paid for.
Even with the house and campsite, Ramsey said the family could not afford a nursing home. “None of you are multi-millionaires. None of you can afford to fund it,” he said.
