The Dallas Mavericks have been a postseason staple in the past quarter of a century. Whether it was Dirk Nowitzki or Luka Doncic, they always found a way to make it back to the NBA Finals. These past two years have not been the same. They now have Cooper Flagg as an emerging talent but are not as competitive due to an injured Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis getting traded away. It maybe correlation or just two unrelated events but Mark Cuban’s regret of selling the franchise to the Adelson family has become more apparent.
Cuban blasts new Mavericks owners
The previous Mavericks majority owner made his opinions very clear in the past weeks. He knows that there are a lot of things that could have been better during his tenure. One of it was hiring Nico Harrison. However, this is the first time that Cuban has outlined disappointment towards the Adelson family and how they are running the Flagg-led team.
He got real on why that regret has lingered for about two years, via Intersections The Podcast.
“I do not regret selling. I regret who I sold to. I made a lot of mistakes in the process, and I’ll leave it at that,” he declared.
There was still a question as to why Cuban sold the Mavericks after just having been in the NBA Finals with Doncic. His answer to all of that? Well, it was more personal than people thought. Cuban wanted to sell out of concern for his children and the sake of the franchise moving forward.
“It’s a big emotional commitment. You hear the passion and everything. Now, imagine going up and down like that every single game. That’s hard. My kids, they were coming at the age where they are coming of the mindset that they want to work at the Mavs. I did not want that for them. It can be abusive, a lot. If fans don’t like what you’re doing or the team’s not doing well. You’re the worst human being on the planet and they treat you that way,” Cuban said.
It usually takes new owners of an NBA franchise to turn things around in a span of three years. Hopefully, the Adelson family get to patch up the holes spotted by Cuban in their negotiations such that they could lead Flagg and Co. to a glory they deserve. For now, their focus will be on the remaining eight games of the season and the NBA Draft.
