UFC Hall of Fame inductee Demetrious Johnson became the latest big name to call for Israel Adesanya’s retirement after UFC Seattle.
Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya’s struggles inside the Octagon continued last weekend at UFC Seattle.
Adesanya, who entered his fight with Joe Pyfer on a three-fight losing streak, lost to Pyfer by second-round TKO at Climate Pledge Arena. Despite a strong start to the bout, Adesanya got caught by several devastating blows from Pyfer before he was finished in a brutal ground-and-pound sequence.
After UFC Seattle, UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping called for Adesanya to hang up the gloves to avoid a similar fate as Anderson Silva and other legends who struggled in the final chapters of their career. But Adesanya seems keen on fighting at least one more time in the Octagon after expressing optimism in his first post-fight social media remarks.
In the meantime, another UFC legend wants Adesanya to hang up the gloves after watching Adesanya’s latest defeat from Octagonside.
Demetrious Johnson presses Israel Adesanya to retire after UFC Seattle
In a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Demetrious Johnson reacted to Adesanya’s performance and was brutally honest in opining on his fighting future.
“When I care about the athletes, I don’t like to see them fight, just because things can happen,” Johnson said of Adesanya.
“I would retire, if I were him…there’s nothing else for him to do in Mixed Martial Arts. He’s done everything, and not even considering the kickboxing matches he’s had as well. He’s been on a tear and put his body on the line, and I think he deserves to relax and enjoy himself.
“It’s just like Dustin Poirier – now that he’s retired, he’s found all of these things he can say ‘Yes’ to that he couldn’t do before.”
In addition to his fighting accolades, Adesanya has a fast-growing YouTube channel and has expressed interest in moving into music once his fighting career concludes. As of now, Adesanya remains undeterred in his fighting pursuits, but these could be the latest moments of his legendary run.
