BOZEMAN, Mont. (April 3, 2026) – The stark result of Montana State’s men’s tennis match on Friday afternoon is that league-leading Northern Arizona topped the Bobcats 4-3 to extend its Big Sky winning streak to 18matches.
 
But the reality, for second-year MSU head coach Mateus Ceolin, was something quite different.
 
“Really, really good,” he said after his team’s loss. “I saw a lot of fight from our guys, a good battle from our guys. I love to see that.”
 
The Bobcats waged a four hour-long battle against the three-time defending conference champions that came down to freshman MSU freshman Max Calaquian’s straight-set loss. In spite of the defeat, Ceolin saw positives. “I think this 100 percent shows that we’re making progress,” he said. “We’re getting better. I’m so proud of the fight this team showed.”
 
After NAU took the doubles point, the Lumberjacks earned a straight-sets win at No. 3 and a 2-1 victory at No. 2 singles. But Montana State sophomore Yassin Elaroussy, firmly entrenched in the top singles spot after a month at the No. 1 position, beat NAU’s Noa Tcherniack 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to halt the Lumberjacks’ momentum.
 
Then freshman Ethan Masselis took a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 4, and Eddie Biss grabbed a 6-3, 6-4win at No. 5. All of a sudden the Bobcats and NAU were tied 3-3, setting the stage for Calaquian’s last stand at No. 6.
 
The Bobcats record drops to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in the Big Sky with the loss. NAU is 13-5 overall, 5-0 in the league. MSU hosts Weber State on Sunday at 10 am.
