Charlotte Caslick‘s hopes of playing at the 2025 Rugby World Cup have been dashed with the dual-code star sidelined by an ankle injury.

The rugby sevens Olympic gold medallist underwent surgery last month after suffering a syndesmosis injury against the Black Ferns in Wellington.

While it was initially hoped that Caslick would be fit to feature in the crucial pool game against the United States in the second week of the tournament, she will not be available for World Cup selection.

While named in the nation’s World Cup squad, Caslick will not fly out to England with the team on Monday afternoon, instead remaining in Australia to complete an accelerated rehabilitation program.

Uncapped Wallaroos centre Manu’a Moleka has been called into the Australian squad.

“Moleka’s call-up will see Caslick move to a possible injury replacement option for the Wallaroos should she be required and fit later in the tournament,” Wallaroos coach Jo Yapp said in a statement.

“We’re really disappointed to lose Charlotte so close to the World Cup. She has shown great commitment to the XVs program and Wallaroos this year.

“Charlotte’s timeline to get back for our pool matches has changed and following medical advice, the decision was made to allow her to continue on an accelerated recovery program, where she could be available as an injury replacement should we require a player later in the tournament.”

Caslick was one of only two sevens players named in Yapp’s 32-strong squad, along with rising playmaker Tia Hinds.

Nine sevens stars put their hands up in December, including the 2024 world player of the year, Maddison Levi.

The Wallaroos’ first pool match against Samoa kicks off at 9pm on Saturday, August 23 (AEST).
