A person has died in a house fire at Devonport, in north-west Tasmania.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Gunn Street at 5am.

After extinguishing the fire, crews found a body inside the unit.

The Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) said they are believed to be the resident of the property.

A formal identification process and an investigation into the cause of the fire will take place today.

The TFS is expected to provide more information at a press conference at 1pm.
