Boxing star Amanda Serrano is set to return to action next month in a double main event of an all-women’s fight card in Texas.
Most Valuable Promotions announced on Tuesday that Serrano will defend her unified featherweight titles against Cheyenne Hanson in one of the headliners of MVPW-03 on May 30 in El Paso, live on ESPN. In the other main event, Stephanie Han will face boxing legend and former UFC star Holly Holm in a rematch with the WBA lightweight title on the line.
Serrano bounced back from back-to-back losses to Katie Taylor in January when she defeated Reina Tellez by unanimous decision. She needs just one knockout win to tie Christy Martin’s record of 32 KOs.
“When MVP told me that Han and Holm were going to rematch in Stephanie’s hometown of El Paso, I said I want to get on the card to support these two queens,” Serrano said in a statement, per ESPN’s Andreas Hale. “Women’s boxing is growing on a global level, and fights like this … are proof of how far we’ve come. I respect every opponent who steps in the ring, and I know Hanson is coming to win and she has KO power. I’m also continuing to hunt the all-time knockout record, so that’s always on my mind, but everything starts with discipline, execution, and performing at the highest level on fight night.”
The fight between Serrano and Hanson is scheduled for 10 three-minute rounds, as opposed to the two-minute rounds that are customary for women’s fights. Hanson is riding a nine-fight win streak into the matchup.
“It means a lot to be representing Germany on this stage,” Hanson said. “Training camp is going to be hard, but I’m focused. I respect my opponent, but I’m coming to make a statement.”
Holm and Han had faced each other in January, but their fight was stopped in the seventh round due to a cut on Holm’s hairline from an accidental clash of heads. Holm was down on all three judges’ scorecards at the time of the stoppage, allowing Han to win a technical decision and retain her lightweight title.
“MVPW-03 is absolutely stacked,” Nakisa Bidarian and Jake Paul, co-founders of Most Valuable Promotions, said in a statement. “… Amanda continues to set the global standard for women’s boxing and matching her in a title defense against a dangerous knockout artist like Cheyenne Hanson creates a blockbuster double main event alongside Stephanie Han vs. Holly Holm.”
