The 2025 MLB season is reaching the home stretch, and the playoffs are on the horizon.
The St. Louis Cardinals closed out this week with a 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday Night Baseball, improving their hopes for the final wild-card spot in the National League.
Let’s take a look at where things stand in both leagues as the playoff picture gets clearer.
Projected AL Playoff Bracket – Wild Card Round
Projected NL Playoff Bracket – Wild Card Round
The Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers are locked into a tight race for the No. 1 spot in the American League. The last time the Blue Jays won the American League regular-season title was 1992, and this year’s team looks motivated to end that drought. Toronto staved off a sweep by the Los Angeles Dodgers with a dramatic 5-4 comeback win on Sunday.
The Seattle Mariners gained some ground on the Houston Astros for the top spot in the AL West by sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays to extend their win streak to seven straight games. The Mariners now sit just a half-game out of the No. 1 spot in the division, which has belonged to the Astros for four consecutive seasons and seven out of the last eight years.
The race for the final wild-card spot is heating up after the New York Yankees lost two of three to the Astros. The Cleveland Guardians are now just a half-game behind the Yankees, and the Texas Rangers are also in the mix.
Over in the National League, the Milwaukee Brewers are in firm command as the only team in the majors with over 70 wins. The Brewers extended their win streak to nine straight games after sweeping the New York Mets this weekend.
Still, the Mets will have to run into some bad luck to be overtaken by the Cincinnati Reds for the final NL wild-card spot. After splitting a four-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Reds will have a tough slate this week with three-game sets against the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies and the Brewers.
There’s still a lot of time between now and the start of the playoffs on Oct. 1, so it will be fun to see how things shake out over the coming weeks.
