CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 8 Virginia (18-4, 11-0 ACC) was too much for Wake Forest (11-12, 3-8 ACC) to overcome on Friday evening. The Deacs were unable to pick up a point against the conference-leading Cavaliers, dropping their record just below .500 with one match remaining in the regular season. Wake Forest will conclude its regular season on Sunday in Blacksburg, as the Deacs take on Virginia Tech in an important match for ACC Championship seeding. 

Virginia’s highly ranked doubles teams came out on top to give the Cavaliers the early lead. Singles, however, was more closely contested. A pair of Demon Deacons, Evie Oxford and Sankavi Gownder, were able to win the opening set in their matches, but were not able to clinch victories due to Virginia securing the win after just three singles matches. 

The Demon Deacons will take on the Hokies of Virginia Tech on Sunday at 12 p.m. The Deacs have won 10 in a row against Virginia Tech, including a thrilling 4-3 victory in Winston-Salem last season. Nevena Carton and Kady Tannenbaum were instrumental in that win; they won as a pair in doubles and then won their singles matches to clinch the win. Following the match, both squads will learn where they land in the final ACC standings. While their seed hasn’t yet been determined, the Demon Deacons will be playing on Wednesday, April 15, in Cary.

How It Happened


Virginia won all three doubles sessions against the Demon Deacons to earn the first point of the match. 



Virginia took an early lead in singles, winning the first set on four of the six courts.
Gownder took the opening set from ranked Genis Salas.
Evie Oxford won the tiebreaker to win her opening set in third singles against No. 82 Rolls.
Pico Navarro was the first to close her match out, as she beat Tannenbaum in straight sets.
No. 81 Yang and X followed suit to complete the Virginia sweep.

I would have liked to see Evie’s match finish; two of the best freshmen in the conference this year and it was a good 7-6 first set to [Evie]. Proud of our team for showing up every time this year, especially in matches on the road against top teams like this. I’m looking forward to playing Virginia Tech Sunday.”

Wake Forest will take on Virginia Tech to close out the regular season. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 12. After that, the Deacs will head to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Championships.
