CS2 Cache creator FMPONE has released his latest map: Splinter. Set in an abandoned lumber yard, Splinter is a standard bomb defusal map that arguably makes the best use of the Source 2 tools we’ve seen so far, thanks to some pretty staggering visuals.

Visually, Splinter is a total feast. It embraces a warm autumnal color scheme, dominated by greens and oranges. However, the snowy mountain backdrop makes everything really pop. Despite the immense level of detail, character visibility doesn’t suffer, which makes it actually viable for competitive play. This comes at a cost, though – performance at this early stage is pretty rocky, which was also a criticism leveled at FMPONE’s CS2 Cache version.

The map layout of Splinter is fairly compact, with interiors and exteriors connected by tight corners. Both bombsites open up nicely, and are by far the most open areas of the map. The question now becomes whether Valve will give it a chance as a community map. The studio previously had Thera, another of FMPONE’s CS2 maps, in the community pool, so it’s not out of the question we’ll see Splinter get the same treatment in the future.

FMPONE is best known as the creator of Cache, which he sold to Valve last year. The developer is expected to release an official CS2 Cache port later this year, with a view to its addition to the Active Duty map pool.
