The competition was golden this weekend in Pasadena.
The city hosted the California State Boxing Tournament at the Victory Park Recreation Center, where a weekend of competition offered among the best local talent in the ring.
California Golden Gloves, which partnered with the city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services for the event, is among the most prestigious boxing tournaments in amateur boxing, organizers said.
Established in 1923, the tournament serves as a platform for amateur boxers to showcase their skills and to compete.
This weekend’s tournament, on Saturday and Sunday, featured top male and female athletes, ages 18 and older, from across Southern California.
Organizers noted the California Golden Gloves has a rich history of launching the careers of legendary masters of the ring — including Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
This weekend’s action set the stage for champions to advance to represent California at the National Tournament of Champions in Tulsa, Oklahoma, May 11-16.
