Motorsport Australian Investigatory Tribunal overturns stunning Sydney Motorsport Park race penalties

A MOTORSPORT Australia Investigatory Tribunal has overturned a raft of one-lap penalties which were handed down at a recent NSW Motor Race Championship event at Sydney Motorsport Park for cars exceeding track limits.

At the time, a total of 27 individuals across nine categories were penalised for a combined 46 laps.

In earlier events, five seconds was the typical penalty for track limit breaches, applied after the appropriate bad sportsmanship warning flags had been displayed.

At SMP on March 14/15, no warning strikes were conveyed prior to laps being deleted from an offending car’s total, with some drivers penalised multiple laps.

Notably, the penalties resulted in the car not being classified in the final results due to not completing 75 percent of the total race distance.

While amendments have been made to the opening race results, there was no remedy for the scrambled progressive grids throughout the event.

A statement from the NSW SuperSport’s Championship read:

In recent weeks, Motorsport Australia have held an Investigatory Tribunal into the imposition of one-lap penalties for exceeding track limits at the NSW Motor Racing Championship event at SMSP on March 14/15.

The Investigatory Tribunal ultimately found that the one-lap penalties should not have been imposed.

As a result, the Investigatory Tribunal recommended that the Race 1 results – for every category – be amended based on the penalties that were noted in the original Race Standing Regulations.

Sometime within the last 24 hours, the amended Race 1 results were published on Natsoft.

NSW Supersports will recalculate the pointscores as soon as possible, and will communicate this to all competitors as soon as available.

The Investigatory Tribunal acknowledged that the amended Race 1 results would affect the Race 2 and Race 3 results, but made no further recommendations.
