Carlos Canal secured the first professional victory of his career on stage 2 of O Gran Camiño, ending a long wait in front of home crowds in Galicia.Riding for Movistar Team, the Spaniard had come close before on familiar roads, but this time converted that promise into a defining result, finally stepping onto the top step after years of near misses.
Speaking after the finish, Canal made clear just how much the moment meant after repeatedly returning to the race in search of a breakthrough.
“Yes, at last. I think it was about time. It’s been a never-ending road to get to this victory, coming back to this race year after year. Knocking on the door and finally today, which for me was the day, we got the win.”
Movistar’s control of the race proved central to the outcome, with the team shaping the finale and ensuring Canal was delivered into position for the decisive sprint.
The Spaniard was quick to underline the role of his team-mates, pointing in particular to the work done to manage the race and neutralise late threats.
“The team was incredible. I have no words to thank them for the work they did. This victory is almost more theirs than mine. Both Nelson and Iván did an amazing job, controlling everything, attacking to keep other teams in check, closing everything down.”
With the pressure of taking a stage win now lifted, Canal also made clear that the focus quickly shifts to the remainder of the race, with further opportunities still to come.
“The race finishes on Saturday, we have to fight until that day. Obviously a stage win brings more calm, but at the same time it gives motivation to know that we can, that we’re there, and that there are some very nice opportunities to come.”
