Dave Grohl has given a new explanation on why Foo Fighters decided to part ways with drummer Josh Freese.

“A drummer’s playing is based on feel,” Grohl told the Irish Times. “That’s all drumming is: feel. It’s hard to define when you’re playing with someone and it feels ‘right,’ or when you’re playing with someone who feels ‘really good,’ and then you’re playing with someone and it feels ‘fucking amazing.’”

“It’s personality, it’s your connection, your rhythm that you have together,” he continued. “It’s just a combination, or a recipe – when you’re cooking something and it says, ‘Salt and pepper to taste’ at the end of the recipe; that’s defined by you.”

Added Grohl, “We know what feels best for our band.”

Previously, Grohl had explained the breakup in terms of Freese’s connection to Foos’ music. “Josh said it best when he said that he didn’t feel our music really resonated with him, and that’s really important,” he said. Ilan Rubin is now Foo Fighters’ drummer, and he plays on their April 24th album Your Favorite Toy, as well as will be behind the kit when they hit the road on their huge North American arena tour.

Elsewhere in the same Irish Times interview, Grohl got uncharacteristically political, lamenting all the “hate and fear” in America, and saying, “There needs to be change.”
