New York Yankees top prospect George Lombard Jr. has gotten a lot of love from fans, scouts, Yankees players, and even players from other organizations.

Recently playing against the Philadelphia Phillies minor league squad and superstar ace Zack Wheeler, he had a lot of good to say about what Lombard could be in his career. While Wheeler might have been messing around a tad, as he can get anybody out at any given moment, no matter how good a hitter is, he even went as far as saying that he hopes he doesn’t have to face him too much one day.
“He was taking good swings all night,” Wheeler said when asked about Lombard, per SI. “You can tell he’s a good, strong kid. He has a good bat path. He’s gonna be a good player, so, you know, hopefully I don’t have to face him too much.”
It’s always cool to see proven big league talents pave the way for young guys around the league. Doing so for a guy that isn’t even in his organization just shows the type of guy Wheeler ultimately is.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, and perhaps fortunately for Wheeler if his comments are genuine, we likely won’t see him for another year or so. The Yankees want to be smart with him, and as they’ve shown over the past few years, they’re going to be safe and not call up prospects too early.
