Paying Scott Drinkwater $1 million a season would be a “bargain” for the Dragons, according to Andrew Johns.
The Saints have endured a horror winless start to the year, two players have recently requested early releases and disillusioned fans are planning a mass protest at an upcoming game.
The struggling club identified Drinkwater as a priority signing but he rejected their first offer. They are looking at reworking the deal and Johns has urged the club to pay seven figures to secure his services.

“If the Dragons get him for a million dollars a year for three years, that’s a bargain,” he said on Wide World of Sports’ Immortal Behaviour.
“They need desperately some creativity and he can do that from fullback. He’s coming into that sweet spot, the next four years he’s gonna be at his best.
“So George Illawarra fans, if you get Drinkwater, it’s a real plus. He looks like a bloke that just gets out there and plays.
“But as long as it’s not played out in the media by these managers, if you’re gonna go just sign it, get it done.”

Fullback remains a key area of focus for the club, with the Dragons looking for more speed around the ruck.
Veteran skipper Clint Gutherson is expected to remain at the club but will most likely be moved to another role in 2027.
Drinkwater remains one of the most sought-after players on the open market, with rival clubs including the Perth Bears and several Sydney-based teams also monitoring his situation closely.
The current situation at the Dragons won’t help their cause in trying to recruit Drinkwater.
